Our house is tucked in the woods of I Pianacci hills in Uzzano.
Uzzano is one of the 11 municipalities in Val di Nievole. “Val di Nievole” (“The Valley of the Nievole”) gets its name from the river that flows in the eastern part of the valley. An area in the south-western part of the province of Pistoia, it’s well known for its charming trails through olive groves, vineyards and sweeping views of Tuscany rolling hills.
Unfortunately, whenever we visit Italy, we barely get to experience the joy of living in I Pianacci. In the past, we’d be constantly up and about keeping up with family and friends, and in the blink of an eye, it’d be time to pack our bags and leave again.
This time, in the spirit adding some exercise while spending more time in our little “casa nel bosco” (“house in the woods”), we decided to hike to the village of Uzzano.
This ancient Tuscan village is impossible to ignore especially when driving uphill at night. It lights up and is vividly noticeable.
We enjoyed our two-hour morning hike to and from Uzzano. The weather was cool and crisp and the green scenery was breathtaking. The castle, which is the heart and soul of this classic medieval village, offers splendid views of Val di Nievole.
The trail we took is part of “Strada Dell’Olio” (“Oil Road”). We hope to explore the remaining trails in the coming days or in our future visits.
