Last month, I went back to Kenya for two weeks. During this short time, I decided to drive down to the Coast Province for a weekend. It had been a while since I last visited the Kenyan coast. I had forgotten how gorgeous our white sandy beaches are, how magical our sunrises and sunsets, how turquoise blue the waters of the Indian Ocean are, and how warm the locals’ hospitality. Life is a pace slower and things are different compared to Nairobi’s hustle and bustle.

The important towns along the coastal strip of Kenya are Diani in the south; and Kilifi, Malindi, Watamu, and Lamu in the North. Having visited Diani so many times in the past, I decided to get a taste of the north, choosing Kilifi as my base.

I booked my stay in Kilifi via Airbnb. After skimming through many options and reading other travelers’ reviews, I settled for Ocean House, a beachfront property.

It was a beautiful experience going to sleep and waking up to the roaring sound of the ocean wind. All of Ocean House’s rooms have an ocean view so I was lucky to catch the sunrise each morning from the comfort of my bed.

Guests have access to the kitchen, a lovely swimming pool, ample parking space, several patios and above all, a lovely yoga deck with the gorgeous turquoise sea as your view.Philip, the caretaker, lives on the property. He is kind and always accessible. I must say he was of such great assistance whenever I needed him. I arrived very late in Kilifi and not being sure where I was going, we kept in touch throughout. He gave me clear directions and was patient enough to wait for my arrival which was a few minutes past midnight.

I loved my stay at Ocean House Kilifi and highly recommend it especially for group travelers. It’s one of those places that you would want to book in its entirety so you can have it all to yourself. It’s perfect for a getaway with friends, a reunion trip with family, or in my case, a yoga retreat!
