DISTANT RELATIVES ECOLODGE AND BACKPACKERS IN KILIFI, KENYA.

Distant Relatives is a unique ecolodge hostel and backpackers’ budget-friendly accommodation in Kilifi. While planning my trip to Kilifi, I was keen to stay here not only because of their pocket-friendly private rooms but also because they offer yoga classes on specific days.

Unfortunately, I found myself having swayed by a couple of bad reviews I read online so I scrapped my plans of booking a room.

(You know how it goes: There’s always that one traveler who wasn’t happy and throws in a nasty review. Unfortunately, we now live in the technology era and travel reviews make both positive and negative impacts.  Don’t be discouraged by some of these bad reviews.)

But after spending an entire afternoon at the lodge with The African Thrillist, I regret not having booked my stay at Distant Relatives.The hostel was an excellent space to mingle with both locals and other travelers, make new friends, and share travel tales while sipping one of their bestselling cocktails called “Dawa”, which means “medicine” in Swahili. I love their rustic reading corner where you can relax with a book on the laid down mattresses. They also have a large swimming pool, a volleyball court and a pool table to keep guests busy while in the lodge.

Miss Wanjira, the lovely lady I found at the reception was kind enough to give us a tour of the lodge. Their accommodation options include camping, dormitories, tents, private rooms, and bandas. Dormitories are big enough to host big groups of up to 10 pax. Their bandas have beauteous little courtyards. which I found to be absolutely charming. Distant Relatives being an ecolodge, they have compost toilets that are clean and very well maintained.They say time flies when you’re having fun. Indeed, the African Thrillist and I ended up extending our stay and deciding to have dinner at the lodge. Most travelers rave about their oven pizza but I had the most luscious soft tender lamb curry. Food and drinks are also reasonably priced.I loved the vibe at Distant Relatives Ecolodge and Backpackers and the genuine warmth and friendliness of its staff. It felt like home and everyone I met truly felt like a distant relative.
